Viagra
One of the most popular prescription drugs on the market, Viagra, is a medication that is used to treat erectile dysfunction disorder in men. While the drug was widely hailed as a wonder-drug, using Viagra can pose health risks, some of which may be severe. Some of these health concerns were not made known by Pfizer, Viagra’s manufacturer, when the drug was released.
Viagra has been the subject of lawsuits and court battles for serious and unexpected side effects. Viagra’s manufacturer, Pfizer, has paid millions of dollars in settlement related to the use of the drug.
In 2007, the Food and Drug Administration requested modification of Viagra’s label to include a warning about sudden hearing loss. A number of the drug’s users have reported to the FDA that they are suffering from a condition called Non-Arteritic Ischemic Optic Neuropathy caused vision loss due to using Viagra. Lawsuits have also been filed involving Viagra’s effect on the cardiovascular system. As a result of the sudden drop in blood pressure, Viagra had been linked to possible heart complications like cardiac arrest.
A recent medical study published by JAMA Internal Medicine suggests that men who use Viagra may have a higher risk of developing melanoma. Although the link between Viagra and melanoma is still being investigated, editor of JAMA Internal Medicine June Robinson wrote an editorial in the same issue as the first study suggesting a plausible association between PDE5 inhibitors like Viagra and melanoma. The connection between Viagra and melanoma is still unclear; however, informed consumers should be aware of the potential risk.
