Depo-Provera Brain Tumor Lawsuit

Injury claims are now being investigated by Neumann Law Group for those who have used the birth control drug Depo-Provera and have developed brain tumors. The manufacturers of Depo-Provera including Pfizer, Pharmacia & Upjohn Company, Greenstone, A-S Medication Solutions, Prasco Laboratories, and Preferred Pharmaceuticals. The manufacturers sold and marketed Depo-Provera as a safe alternative to oral birth control knowing that it would cause devastating and potentially deadly meningiomas in the brain—and continue to do so.

The manufacturers of Depo-Provera,failed to warn patients or their doctors of the possible dangers in using this medication. The likelihood of widespread damage to other patients that may lead to additional legal claims is significant.

What Is Depo-Provera?

In the 1960s, researchers began to develop Depo-Provera as a hormonal birth control method that would be more effective and longer lasting than other methods of contraception. Rather than taking a pill daily, patients only need an injection every three months. Another goal of Depo-Provera was to better preserve one’s fertility should they wish to stop using contraceptives. Many people are unable to use oral birth control for various reasons and Depo-Provera provided the opportunity for effective birth control without the need of a daily pill.

How Long Have They Known That Depo-Provera Causes Brain Tumors?

Initial research did not link Depo-Provera to an increased risk for brain tumors, but as time went on, manufactures were made aware of concerns in the early 1990s that Depo-Provera could be linked to a higher incidence of brain tumors. Despite this early research, the drug remained on the market. Throughout the 1990s and 2000s scientists and researchers remained concerned about the association between Depo-Provera and brain tumors with new testing. Research and studies on Depo-Provera continued throughout the 2000s and in 2011 In 2012 the Journal of Clinical Oncology published solid evidence that the increased risk of brain tumors while using Depo-Provera was indeed more significant than previously identified. Regulatory bodies became more concerned, and the Food and Drug Administration directed the manufacturers to modify its product labeling to clearly provide more details to patients about the risk of brain tumors while using their products. To date, the manufacturers of Depo-Provera have failed to put warning labels on their products as recommended by the Food and Drug Administration around 2011.

The manufacturers of Depo-Provera maintain the position that their birth control drug is safe and effective; however, have not provided a clear timeline as to when they were made aware of the risk of brain tumors. They were clearly notified in the late 1990s or the early 2000s when scientific research showed the connection. The connection between Depo-Provera and brain tumors were continuously brought to the attention of the manufacturers by way of scientific research; however, the continued to sell and market this drug as safe to patients and their doctors.

Further, new studies published in 2024 support the assertion that Depo-Provera is linked to brain tumors.

Meningioma

The most common forms of brain tumors that develop from the use of Depo-Provera are called meningiomas. These are tumors that develop between the protective membranes covering the brain and spinal cord. They can become cancerous. Meningiomas are slow growing tumors and can be present without symptoms for years. When symptoms do begin, one may experience headaches, seizures, vision loss, hearing loss, memory loss, weakness in arms and legs, personality changes, speech issues, balance problems—to name a few. Meningioma brain tumors often develop due to hormonal factors.

If a meningioma brain tumor is identified on an MRI, a biopsy will likely be necessary to rule out cancer. Depending on the size of the tumor, surgery could be required to remove the tumor. If a tumor cannot be removed, patients will undergo radiation therapy in efforts to shrink it. Medications, such a seizure prevention drugs will also likely be a new normal for those suffering from meningioma brain tumors.

Neumann Law Group Is Accepting New Depo-Provera Brain Tumor Claims

In October 2024, the first lawsuit was filed against the manufacturers of Depo-Provera due to the development of a meningioma. Since that time, new claims are being brought forward almost weekly. Despite decades of advance knowledge regarding the risk for brain tumors while using Depo-Provera, the manufacturers have continued to sell and market this dangerous drug to patients and their doctors. Depo-Provera has a history of being sued due to knowledge of risks of developing osteoporosis while using Depo-Provera, so it is clear that profit is the only motivator for these manufacturers, not patient safety.
