Pressure Cookers
Experienced Product Liability Lawyers Dedicated to Pursuing Meaningful Compensation on Behalf of Clients Injured by Dangerous Consumer Products
When you bought a pressure cooker, you were thinking the product could make your life easier. However, over recent years, hundreds of people have ended up in the emergency room due to injuries caused by pressure cooker accidents. The problems arise out of the lids, which are designed to create airtight seals, preventing the hot steam and pressure from escaping. If the seal is broken before the pressure is released, the contents are shot from the opening. Even the safety lids manufacturers are creating still sometimes fail. Defective pressure cookers present a very real risk of serious burns and other injuries resulting from the pressure cooker exploding or liquids bursting from the pot.
The Michigan defective pressure cooker lawyers at the Neumann Law Group are scheduling free consultations for anyone who was injured due to a pressure cooker explosion. Our product liability attorneys have more than 200 years of combined experience helping to connect accident victims with the compensation they need, deserve, and are entitled to.
Pressure Cooker Recalls
A number of pressure cookers have been recalled. For example, in 2006, Welbilt recalled 900 pressure cookers after the company received 37 complaints from consumers who suffered serious burns, including at least four incidences resulting in third-degree burns.
In 2007, Manttra recalled over 38,000 pressure cookers to address a similar design defect that allowed hot contents within the unit to spill out. That same year, Bella Cucina Zip issued a recall of 8,300 pressure cookers after receiving consumer complains that the cookers exploded causing burn injuries.
A few years later, in 2015, Breville USA recalled approximately 36,000 of their 6-quart electric pressure cookers due to concerns over the sealing gasket unexpectedly releasing built-up pressure, increasing the risk of explosions and burns. And then in 2017, Aldi recalled the Crofton Chef Collection’s 6-liter pressure cooker following reports that the lids could pop off under pressure, resulting in an explosion.
Most recently, in 2023, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (“CPSC”) announced a multi-brans pressure cooker recall affecting about 860,000 pressure cookers due to the potential burn risk these models present. The 2023 pressure cooker recall affects Bella, Bella Pro Series, Crux, and Cooks electric pressure cookers in the 6, 8, and 10-quart capacities. The recall also impacts the 5, 8, and 12-quart Bella stovetop pressure cookers.

What Are the Most Common Pressure Cooker Injuries?
When a pressure cooker explodes, the resulting injuries can be severe. The following are common pressure cooker injuries; of course, the severity of a victim’s injuries will depend on the intensity of the explosion and their proximity to the device:
Burns: The contents of the cooker are usually extremely hot. If these come into contact with the skin, they can cause first-, second-, or third-degree burns.
Lacerations: The explosion might shatter parts of the cooker or nearby objects, leading to cuts from flying shrapnel.
Blunt Force Trauma: The force of the explosion can hurl the cooker or its parts, striking individuals and causing bruises or fractures.
Eye Injuries: Hot liquids or flying debris can cause injuries ranging from minor irritation to blindness.
Hearing Loss: The loud noise from the explosion can damage hearing, either temporarily or permanently.
Inhalation Injuries: Breathing in hot steam or vapors can damage the respiratory system.
Given these risks, it’s essential to follow all safety precautions when using a pressure cooker. However, when you’re dealing with a defective pressure cooker, even the most careful consumers can experience a pressure cooker accident. Unfortunately, these incidents often leave victims permanently disfigured.
